What your literature teacher thinks it means: The author uses the brown fox and the log together as a symbol of black people finally getting over that hump known as slavery. The fox literally jumps over the log to show how black people have not only overcome this obstacle, but have also moved past it onto bigger and better progression as a people. They are described as quick to show how eager they are working towards a new image to be proud of.
What the author actually meant: A fox jumped over a log.
